IBI Group-Designed Aintree Helipad is Ready to Save Lives
Aintree University Hospital has a new, £1million helipad, which is set to improve the response times of emergency services in the north west of England and North Wales.
Design and technology firm, IBI Group, led the design of the helipad and secured its planning permission in February 2017. Now a reality, it will cut the time to transfer patients into the hospital, enabling medical staff to deal with critically ill patients much more quickly, ultimately saving more lives. Prior to the completion of the project, air ambulances had to land on playing fields over half a mile away.
IBI Group Town Planner, Katy Barry, said: “The helipad is just a few metres away from Aintree Hospital’s new Urgent Care and Trauma Centre which was also designed by IBI Group. The helipad’s design takes into account the views of local residents, and its construction means that the region will receive a much more efficient emergency service.”
Mrs Sharon Scott, Clinical Director for Major Trauma at Aintree, said: “Every minute counts with major trauma and it is vital that emergency patients receive treatment as soon as possible to increase their chances of survival and recovery.”
The first helicopter test flights took place on 30 June, and the pad will now be available for use by North West Air Ambulance in conjunction with Aintree’s role as a Major Trauma Centre.
